A balanced diet is essential for healthy and happy rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small pets. But what exactly should be on our little furry friends' plates? In this article, we'll take a look at the most important components: Green fodder, vegetables and fruit – and how to combine them correctly.
Green fodder forms the foundation of a species-appropriate diet. This includes various grasses, herbs, leaves, and fresh twigs. It provides important fiber, which stimulates digestion and ensures healthy teeth.
Popular varieties include:
dandelion
daisy
Klee
Vogelmiere
nettle
Apple tree branches
Tip: Make sure that the green fodder is fresh and untreated – ideally from your own garden or from trusted sources.
Vegetables are an important source of vitamins and minerals. Varieties high in fiber and low in starch and sugar are particularly suitable.
Suitable options include:
Carrots (in moderation, due to sugar)
Cucumber
Paprika
fennel
Zucchini
Saddlery
Important: Always give vegetables fresh and in small amounts to avoid digestive problems. Introduce new varieties gradually.
Fruit contains a lot of sugar and should therefore only be offered occasionally and in small quantities. It's great as a reward or to keep your dog occupied.
Popular fruits include:
Apple (without seeds)
pear
Strawberries
Melon
blueberries
Danger: Citrus fruits and grapes are not suitable and should be avoided.
Basis: Fresh hay and plenty of green fodder
Daily: Small portions of vegetables
Now and then: A little fruit as a snack
The right mix of greens, vegetables, and fruit keeps your rodents healthy and adds variety to their diet. Pay attention to quality, variety, and your pets' individual preferences – that way, their food bowl will always be tasty and nutritious!
