Welcome to third part of our food list series For rabbits!
Having already introduced celery, fennel, carrots (Part I), cucumber, zucchini & broccoli (Part II), today we continue with three green leafy vegetables that often end up in the bowl – but not all are equally suitable.
Today's focus:
🥬 Iceberg lettuce
🌿 endive
🌱 Spinach leaves
Iceberg lettuce is a common guest in salad bowls, but only suitable for rabbits. conditionally recommendedIt contains a lot of water, but very few nutrients.
✅ Advantages:
well tolerated in small quantities
crisp & fresh
⚠️ Disadvantages:
very low in nutrients
high nitrate content (especially in older leaves)
Overfeeding can lead to digestive problems.
📌 Conclusion:
Only rarely & in small quantities Feed as a side dish rather than a main ingredient.
Unlike iceberg lettuce, endive (also a relative of chicory) very well suited for rabbits. It contains many bitter substances, which even stimulate digestion.
✅ Advantages:
low in calories & high in nutrients
Good tooth wear due to firmer blades
rich in vitamins (A, C, K) and minerals
📌 Conclusion:
Highly recommended! Endive can be a regular part of your diet. It's best when washed, fresh, and combined with other leafy greens or vegetables.
spinach It is rich in vitamins and iron, but also contains Oxalic acid, which, when overfed, Calcium intake inhibiting and potentially putting a strain on the kidneys in the long term.

many vitamins (A, C, E) and folic acid
varied feeding plan
popular with many rabbits
⚠️ Notes:
not daily, but only occasionally give
Not suitable for rabbits with kidney problems
only raw and fresh Feed (cooked spinach is taboo!)
📌 Conclusion:
Okay in small quantities – as part of a varied fresh food rotation. Not as the main ingredient.
